IBM Fran Allen PhD fellowship for the year 2008-2009.

Animashree Anandkumar is the winner of the 2008 Fran Allen IBM PhD fellowship. As part of the award, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell also receives a grant of $30,000 towards encouraging and retaining female students in engineering.

The Fran Allen fellowship was instituted by IBM in 2007 in honor of Fran Allen, a pioneer in computer science and the first female scientist to receive the coveted A.M. Turing Award. Dr. Allen presented this year's award to Anima at the Grace Hopper Conference at Keystone, Colorado in Oct. 2008. It is given annually to one female PhD student in recognition of her research.
